Allen rode his first wave in 1970 at Wreck Bay (Florentia) when an American Vietnam draft dodger from California living on the beach saw him out on a air mattress and offered him a turn on his board. He had a tough time getting it back. Ever since he has spent a lifetime enjoying the ocean and riding waves.
Allen has been making hollow cedar surfboards for eleven years now motivated by a respect for the environment and the impact throw away foam boards have on it. He builds hollow wooden boards that look and feel like a solid wood board but have all the performance benefits of a lightweight foam board. His surfboards are made from clear edge grain west coast cedar that has been cut and milled locally supporting sustainable forestry practices then finished with four ounce fiberglass cloth and polyester resin. Cedar wood has spiritual significance to the First Nations People of the coast and has most certainly proven its seaworthiness over thousands of years of use. What better material could be found to make something that will be used in the ocean on the west coast that will stand up to moisture permeated with natural oils, is strong and lightweight, beautiful in color, when steamed will bend without breaking other than red cedar. Cedar is a natural choice for wooden surfboard construction. His shapes are replica's of classic boards including rail shape, rocker and volume flow. He spends countless hours paying attention to detail and the craftsmanship is flawless using hand tools and traditional woodworking techniques to create works of art. His regular rides have been tried and tested in all conditions and after years of use they still look like new, no heel dings or stress marks. He is very proud of his work and enjoys the compliments on his way across the beach to the surf.
When it comes to a smooth riding long lasting surfboard wood is definitely good. These boards will last for generations not three summers. You will ride this board, your children will ride this board and your grandchildren will ride this board and it will only get prettier as the years go by.
