Sheryl Tate
Sheryl Tate (McKay) is a member of the Toquaht First Nation, originating from Nitinath on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. She is masterfully weaving cedar bark and grass into beautiful pieces of Art, including baskets, floats, rattles and hats. She is from the Wolf clan and comes from a long line of weavers, all of them well known. She spent many hours with her mother Charlotte Carpenter who herself is a master weaver who learned the cedar bark weaving from her great grandmother Mary McKay.
Sheryl goes out to harvest together with her Husband and her parents and prepares her own material, using red and yellow cedar bark. Her husband is also an artist, Russell (Floyd) Tate, well known for his beautiful cedar masks and totem pole carvings. Sheryl is combining both, contemporary and traditional methods in her weaving.
